Voices of Medieval England provided brief and interesting insight into various topics of the Northern Europe societies of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. It was more textbook format than cover to cover reading, but was insightful.Sample subjects include marriage contracts and commerce in those societies; influences from Germanic to Norman; Jews’ place in England, from William the Conqueror through their expulsion; and variations of the Catholic faith that were present centuries before Martin Luther.I wish especially with slang like ‘medieval’ being used to denote particularly cruel ideas and practices more would read this particular book of the “Voices of” series. Spoiler property was passed on to women as well as men, and, with all the rhetoric against Muslims, the wealthy of this time period might pay a tax to exempt themselves from military service (the purpose of the ‘dhimmi’ tax on non Muslims of those societies), and Muslim marriage contracts and dowries are similar to the Germanic influenced wedding contracts with gifts of Medieval European societies. Knowledge of history is beneficial in seeing what seemingly different societies have in common.
